What happened to 2015? It went by in a flash. David Letterman had his last show, we met Caitlyn Jenner, we lost BB King and Leonard Nimoy, we lived through deflategate, Brian Williams and Donald Trump... and the year’s not over yet. The Holiday Auction is always a fun one at Zachys–we like to close out the year with a bang, and 2015’s no different. In this 1600+ lot auction, there are a few highlights I’d like to draw to your attention.

The first is one of our anchor consignments of the sale, the Private Collection of Bob Hudson (lots 280-602). In this business we so often focus on estimates, but wines are meant for enjoying with friends. It’s nice to remember that fact every once in a while, and we’re delighted to have Bob express this sentiment himself in the introduction he wrote to his own collection. The collection focuses mainly on Bordeaux (including an impressive 15-liter bottle of ’00 Mouton Rothschild, lot 334) and California Cabernet (don’t miss the Harlan vertical back to ’91, lot 515) but there’s also an intelligent selection of Burgundy from Rouget, Clos de Tart, Groffier and others, as well as Vega Sicilia, Unico, and others.

This sale also features a “Spotlight on Italy” (lots 1447-1676). In a country with diverse climates, geography and winemaking, this section of 229 lots focuses on the Super Tuscans of Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and loads of Masseto, as well as Barolo and Barbaresco from Giacosa, Conterno and Voerzio. Do some digging in this section–there’s a magnum of ’64 Mascarello (lot 1628) and rare bottles of ’95 Quintarelli Amarone Riserva (lot 1630) so time perusing this section will be rewarded.

Lastly, I’ve got to point out the consignment direct from the cellars of Champagne Philipponnat (lots 1216-1244)–this is the Holiday Auction, after all. This main highlight here is a vertical of the famous Clos des Goisses, back to the ’52 vintage, as well as mags and jeros. We’ve also printed an interview with Charles Philipponnat to give you a look at his feelings on this consignment.

Of course, these are just a few highlights. It goes without saying that, in an auction of this size, there’s something for everyone. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with us at with any questions you may have. And remember, 2016 is right around the corner and our auctions are filling up fast. Be sure to get your lists in today!
